June is Men's Health Month

Men's Health Week was established by the Men's Health Network and officially by the U.S. Congress in 1994. This was extended to the whole month of June later in the 1990s. Similar to women, men have a tendency to worry about the health of others they care for and ignore their own needs. They tend to wait until the severity of symptoms increases to a point they can no longer ignore them, then seek help. This leads to undiagnosed conditions like heart disease, prostrate cancer, diabetes, mental health issues, and other cancers.

According to the CDC, 14.7% of men age 18 and up are in fair or poor health. 41.6% of men age 20 and up have obesity. Men age 20 and up with high blood pressure or taking medication for high blood pressure equal to about 51% of the population.

This is a great time for you to remind that men in your life that their health matters too. Encourage them to make those appointments needed to care for their physical, mental and sexual health. Also promote a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and at least 150 minutes of exercise per week, as well as healthy sleep habits.

Men can start taking care of their health in three easy steps:

  1. Schedule an annual physical.
  2. Discuss mental health issues with a professional.
  3. Schedule an appointment with a urologist.
